Nizatidine – Uses, Information and Safety

What Nizatidine is

Nizatidine is a medicine from the group known as H2-receptor antagonists. These medicines reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

What Nizatidine is used for

Nizatidine is used to:

  • treat and heal stomach and duodenal ulcers

  • treat conditions caused by too much stomach acid such as:

    • acid reflux

    • heartburn

    • indigestion

  • treat problems caused by acid affecting the oesophagus (gullet)

  • prevent ulcers, including those that may occur when taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen or diclofenac

  • help stop ulcers coming back

Do not take Nizatidine if:

  • you are allergic to nizatidine or any of the ingredients

  • you have previously had an allergic reaction to similar anti-ulcer medicines
    Possible allergic reaction symptoms include rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing.

Warnings and precautions

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Nizatidine if:

  • you have kidney problems

  • you have liver problems

Other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including those bought without a prescription. This includes salicylates such as aspirin.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

If you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breast-feeding, please consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine.

Driving and using machines

Nizatidine is not expected to affect your ability to drive or use machines.

How to take Nizatidine

Always take Nizatidine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you.

Typical adult doses may include:

  • Stomach or duodenal ulcers:
    150 mg morning and evening, or 300 mg once in the evening

  • Indigestion, acid reflux, heartburn:
    150–300 mg twice daily

  • Prevention of ulcers returning:
    150 mg in the evening

If you have kidney problems, your doctor may adjust your dose.

Nizatidine is not recommended for children or adolescents.

Overdose or missed dose

  • If you take too much, contact a doctor or hospital immediately.

  • If you forget a dose, take it when remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Do not double dose.

Possible side effects

Like all medicines, Nizatidine can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.

Stop taking the medicine and seek medical advice immediately if you experience:

  • allergic reactions (rash, swelling, breathing difficulty)

  • yellowing of skin or eyes

  • unusual bruising or bleeding

  • frequent infections

Other side effects may include sweating, sleepiness, nausea, diarrhoea, fever, headache or changes in blood test results.
