Malarone is an oral antimalarial medication that prevents malaria when traveling to areas at risk of malaria infections. Mosquito bites cause the disease. Malaria causes fever, vomiting, and even headaches. Malarone is swallowed before, during, and after visiting malaria-prone places to prevent infections by the four species of plasmodium parasites. GlaxoSmithKline Company manufactures prescription drugs. It is taken once daily, 1-2 days before travel. The treatment should continue until one week after returning.

Directions

You must always follow the instructions given by your doctor for effective results.

  • The recommended dose is one tablet to be taken roughly the same time each day.
  • When travelling to a mosquito prone region, you must take Atovaquone/Proguanil tablets a day or two before entering the area and continue using the medication a week after leaving the area to prevent re-infection.
  • Atovaquone/Proguanil tablets can be taken with or without meals.
  • You must continue using the medication until your dose ends even if your symptoms improve to ensure all the parasites in the blood are killed.

Ingredients

Atovaquone 250mg and Proguanil Hydrochloride, iron oxide red, poloxamer 188, titanium dioxide, macrogol 400, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone K30, sodium starch glycollate, hydroxypropyl cellulose, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, and polyethene glycol 8000.

Warnings

  • Do not take Atovaquone/Proguanil tablets if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.
  • Do not take Atovaquone/Proguanil tablets if you have severe liver or kidney problems.
  • You must inform your doctor of other prescription medications you are currently using before using Atovaquone/Proguanil tablets.
  • Do not use Atovaquone/Proguanil tablets when pregnant or breastfeeding without informing your doctor first.
  • You must avoid alcohol consumption when using Atovaquone/Proguanil tablets to prevent getting severe side effects.
