Description

What is XifaXanta 200mg Tablet?

Xifaxanta is an antibiotic medication that contains the active ingredient rifaximin. It is primarily used to treat traveller’s diarrhoea caused by certain strains of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria. Unlike other antibiotics, Xifaxanta works mainly in the gut and is not absorbed into the bloodstream, which helps to reduce the risk of systemic side effects. This makes it an effective treatment option for bacterial infections in the digestive system, particularly for those travelling to areas where contaminated food or water is common. Xifaxanta is available in tablet form, making it convenient for use on the go.

How Does Xifaxanta Work?

Xifaxanta works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria in the intestines, specifically non-invasive strains of E. coli, which are a common cause of traveller’s diarrhoea. Rifaximin, the active ingredient, targets bacterial RNA synthesis, effectively killing the bacteria responsible for the infection. Since Xifaxanta acts locally in the intestines, it treats the infection directly at the source without being absorbed into the bloodstream. This allows for quick relief from symptoms such as diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and bloating, usually within a few days of starting treatment. However, it is important to complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve.
