What Is Caverject Injection?

Caverject is a prescription injection that treats erectile dysfunction (ED) in adult men. It contains alprostadil, a man-made version of a natural substance. This medication boosts blood flow to the penis, helping you achieve an erection. Doctors often prescribe it when oral ED tablets don’t work.

What Is Caverject Used For?

Caverject is primarily prescribed to:

— Help men achieve and maintain an erection
— Support sexual function in those who cannot take or haven’t responded to oral ED treatments
— Diagnose certain types of erectile problems through penile function testing

How Does Caverject Work?

Caverject contains alprostadil, which works by relaxing blood vessels and muscle tissue in the penis. This increases blood flow to the area, leading to an erection. Unlike oral medications, Caverject is injected directly into the base or side of the penis and doesn’t rely on sexual stimulation to work.

How Should Caverject Be Taken?

— Inject into the side of the penis using the supplied syringe and needle
— Use as advised by your doctor—typically 5 to 20 minutes before sexual activity
— Do not use more than once in 24 hours or more than 3 times a week
— Rotate injection sites to avoid bruising or scar tissue
— You’ll usually receive full training before self-injecting at home

Are There Any Side Effects?

As with all medicines, Caverject may cause side effects—though not everyone will experience them. Most are mild and short-lived, especially once you’ve become used to the injection process.

Common side effects:

— Pain in the penis
— Bruising, redness, or swelling at the injection site
— A prolonged or uncomfortable erection (priapism)

Uncommon or rare side effects:

— Curving or bending of the penis (Peyronie’s disease)
— Lumps or hard tissue at the injection site
— Dizziness or feeling light-headed
— Localised bleeding or inflammation

Serious side effects (seek urgent medical advice):

— Erection lasting more than 4 hours
— Severe or ongoing pain after injection
— Signs of an allergic reaction (e.g. rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing)

Always speak to a doctor if you’re worried about any side effects or if they don’t go away.

Who Should Avoid Caverject?

Caverject isn’t suitable for everyone. Avoid this treatment if:
— You have sickle cell anaemia, leukaemia, or multiple myeloma
— You have a penile implant or anatomical deformation of the penis
— You’re allergic to alprostadil or any ingredients in the injection
— You’ve been advised not to have sexual activity due to heart health
— You’re under 18 years of age

Always consult a healthcare provider before starting treatment.

How Should Caverject Be Stored?

— Store the powder and solution at room temperature (below 25°C)
— Keep away from direct heat, moisture, and light
— Use immediately after mixing the powder and solvent
— Keep out of sight and reach of children
— Dispose of used syringes safely following pharmacist or local guidelines

  • Caverject typically works within 5 to 20 minutes after injection. Timing can vary slightly between individuals.
  • No. Unlike oral ED treatments, Caverject does not rely on sexual stimulation to produce an erection.
  • Yes. Most men are trained by a healthcare professional to self-inject safely and confidently at home.
  • Do not use it more than once in 24 hours or more than 3 times a week. Overuse increases the risk of side effects.
  • Seek urgent medical help if your erection lasts more than 4 hours. This could indicate priapism, which needs prompt treatment.
