Description
What is Metoclopramide?
Metoclopramide is a medication that is used to treat various conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. It can also be used to relieve nausea and vomiting and to promote gastric emptying in people with slow stomach motility. Metoclopramide is available in oral, injectable, and rectal forms.
How Does Metoclopramide Work?
Metoclopramide works by blocking the action of a chemical in the body called dopamine. Dopamine is responsible for regulating the movement of food through the stomach and intestines. By blocking the action of dopamine, food and acids can move out of the stomach more quickly. As a result, the functions of the digestive system are improved since the food can move through the digestive system quickly and the symptoms of gastrointestinal problems such as nausea, gas and vomiting are reduced. Metoclopramide can also be used to increase the production of breast milk in women who are breastfeeding.
